Local Government Reorganisation
The Government has informed local authorities that it has not yet reached a final decision regarding Local Government Reorganisation in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. We are now expecting to hear back by the end of October.
While this delay is disappointing, particularly given the significant work already undertaken by councils across the area, discussions and joint planning between the seven local authorities will continue to ensure we are prepared for any future changes. For residents, the key message is that there are currently no changes to council services. All services will continue to operate as normal while councils await further guidance and a final decision from Government.
I will continue to keep residents and the Parish Council updated as further information becomes available.
Highways & Transport
Cambridgeshire County Council has agreed an extension to its highways maintenance contract with M Group until June 2030. The revised agreement includes measures aimed at improving value for money, strengthening quality assurance, and increasing accountability in the delivery of highway maintenance services across the county.
LHI Success
I would like to congratulate Over Parish Council on securing a successful Local Highways Improvement (LHI) bid for the school crossing project. This is excellent news for the village and a significant step forward for road safety. I would particularly like to recognise the hard work and dedication of Amy Lord and Ami Carter, whose commitment and persistence were instrumental in achieving this successful outcome. Their efforts have helped secure an important investment that will benefit local children, families, and the wider community.
Local Matters
Swavesey Park & Ride
Highways officers have used some of the surplus material stored at the site to level the small parking area adjacent to the Busway stop in Swavesey. I have also requested an update regarding the remaining material still held on site and any plans for its future use or removal.
Busway Flooding Issues
Busway officers have commissioned specialist consultants to assess potential options for reducing the risk of flooding on sections of the Busway between Swavesey and St Ives. This work will help inform future mitigation measures and identify the most effective long-term solutions.
Bus Stop Timetables
I recently spoke with Stephensons of Essex, the new operator of the Bus 5 service. The company advised that responsibility for bus stop timetables and associated signage does not rest with bus operators. I have therefore contacted the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA), which is responsible for bus stop infrastructure and timetable information, and I will continue to pursue this matter until updated information is displayed at affected stops.
