Over Gardening Club
Over Gardening Club
Over Gardening Club meet on the third Wednesday of each month, usually at the Community Centre at 7.30pm. Membership is £15pa and current members receive 10% discount on most items sold at Oakington Garden Centre. Our speaker for the April meeting is Fiona Rose giving a talk entitled "In the Garden with William Morris: Flora as Art". More famous for his work inside the home, William Morris (1834-1896) made a significant impact on the evolution of the English garden. He considered the garden inseparable from the house, rejecting Victorian formality and instead drawing inspiration from medieval gardens. This lecture examines his gardening principles drawing from Morris’s lectures, letters, poetry, and prose. It also explores his own gardens that served as an inspiration behind his flower-based designs: Red House, Kelmscott Manor, Kelmscott House and the garden at his factory Merton Abbey Works.

Swavesey and District History Society
Swavesey and District History Society
22 April. The Workhouse and Poorhouse – 700 years of old and new Poor Laws. Colin Chapman. The Poor Law of 1601 levied a mandatory poor rate on every parish. Those who were too ill, old, destitute, or who were orphaned children were put into a local 'workhouse' or 'poorhouse'. These were tax-supported residential institutions started as a method of providing a less expensive (to the taxpayers) alternative to what we would nowadays call "welfare". Poor housing conditions included leaking pipes or roofs, inadequate heating and, in due course, dangerous electrical wiring. In November of 1845 the diet of the inmates consisted primarily of bread, meat, potatoes, sweet milk, sour milk, oatmeal and tea. At least half of our members live in Over, including our Secretary. The History Society meets at 7.30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month in The Carol Shaw Room at Swavesey Village College – through the main entrance then 20 metres along the corridor to the right. No need to book so you are welcome to just walk in. If you want further information, contact our Secretary, Carolyn on carolyn.redmayne@ntlworld.com or on 01954 230037.

u3a St Ives Open Day
Tuesday 29th April 2-4pm St Ives Corn Exchange The u3a Open Day is the perfect opportunity for adults coming up to their retirement years to explore a diverse range of creative, educational or social interest opportunities. They will see how they can develop their interests, make new friends and have fun. Visitors will have the chance to meet existing members and explore the variety of groups on offer including arts, sciences, humanities and sport. From painting to philosophy, languages to digital skills, the u3a offers something for everyone, no matter their backgrounds. Highlights on the day will include opportunities to discuss retirement, demonstrations and entertainment from the singing and music groups. Free refreshments also available. “At u3a we believe that sharing interests and hobbies leads to new friendships and opportunities,” says Peter Cooper, Chair of St Ives u3a. “Our Open Day is an ideal chance to see what’s on offer and how you can get involved.” We are especially hoping to see people who are already semi-retired, working part-time or who find they have more time on their hands, to see how joining u3a now will enhance their retirement and may even inspire some to start a new group. With over 900 members and 60 + groups, many are full or have waiting lists, so new ideas from enthusiastic individuals are always welcome. We all work together to make groups a success with a support team on hand and plenty of volunteers to help. To learn more about the u3a and our Open Day please visit: https://u3aivo.uk/open-day-2025/ We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the joy of lifelong learning!
