Was it the Northern Lights or Steve?
Over has been dazzled this week with beautiful displays of the Northern Lights. Those who were late to bed and found themselves staring up to the skies were rewarded with several long viewings of this previously rare sight. A more recent scientific discovery, Steve, was also visible across the UK this week. Steve (or in full: Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement) – is unpredictable and only lasts for a short time during an aurora display. Steve appears as a ribbon and scientists suggest Scientists suggests it comprises a fast-moving stream of extremely hot particles called a sub-auroral ion drift, or SAID. Now, a few facts (source: BBC News): The Northern…

Over Gardening Club News
We began our autumn programme of events on Wed 18th September with an informative talk on spring bulbs. Our speaker, George Lockwood, gave us each a list of those he recommended, with useful growing tips. It was a very busy evening as we had several other things going on… We held the judging of our annual growing competition – a begonia this year. In spring we had handed out a free, tiny, begonia tuber to each member. Many had failed to thrive, but we had 11 begonia plants brought in for judging ranging in size. South Cambs District Councillor (SCDC) Bill Handley’s Report to Over Village News – September 2024
Five Year Housing Land Supply SCDC has published the most recent Greater Cambridge housing trajectory with housing land supply calculations. This is important to every village as without it a lot of protective planning policies fall away, as experienced in the years prior to 2018. The trajectory (which shows the anticipated delivery of new homes across the district) shows that there continues to be a healthy cushion – 6.5 years for the 2024-2029 period. ‘Cambridge 2050’ housing need The previous Conservative government’s ‘Cambridge 2050’ proposals suggested that around 150,000 new homes would be needed to meet demand in the Greater Cambridge region. Whilst the new Labour government has not formally…

Report for September from Cambridgeshire County Councillor Firouz Thompson
Dear residents, I hope that you had a pleasant summer and managed to take a well-earned break. August brought us some warm and dry weather at last. This is my first update of the autumn and, as is the tradition, it comes with a reminder to be prepared for the darker evenings and cooler weather when you’re out and about, especially if you’re driving and haven’t used your lights much in the past few months. ADULTS & HEALTH Covid Vaccine Programme The government has accepted advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation for an autumn COVID-19 vaccination programme this year. All those aged 65 or over, all those…

Over’s New Coffee Shop
You may have noticed a lovely young woman wielding a paintbrush recently outside the empty shop on the high street (next door to Over Stores, and opposite The Admiral.)…. and the chaps from local firm AB construction hard at work fitting it out internally, including putting in a kitchen area. That’s because of a new venture by sisters, Becki and Carley : “ Teabellies” – our new high street coffee shop. The meaning of the name is “the appreciative glug in your stomach when you have finished a delicious cup of tea”… (or coffee)! Carley, an Over resident, will be running the café, serving hot and cold drinks, cakes and…
