St Mary’s Church
I write to you as your new vicar having moved into the village in August last year. Katie and myself, and our daughter Lily, are grateful for the warm welcome we have received and are enjoying settling into village life. I come to you from a post in the centre of Cambridge where I was curate of two churches (not at the same time) – ‘curate’ is the Church of England jargon for somebody in their first job as a minister. And before I was ordained I was a teacher in Special Educational Needs, focusing on children with particular mental health and behaviour needs. In my less-professional life I am…

Foundation Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Foundation BJJ runs children’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sessions at Over Methodist Church Hall. We are a community-based club offering high-quality, age-appropriate martial arts teaching that focuses on confidence, coordination, respect and emotional resilience in a supportive, welcoming environment. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that helps children develop body awareness, balance, strength and problem-solving skills, while also learning to work calmly with others, listen, and respect boundaries. Our sessions blend structured activities, games and simple techniques, with an emphasis on enjoyment, safety and steady progression. Foundation BJJ is run by a local family and is firmly rooted in the Over community. We aim to create a club where…

Over W.I. – December meeting
Our speaker in December was Diana Boston of the Manor House, Hemingford Grey. Diana told us of her Mother-In-Law, Lucy Maria Boston, an English writer whose life became inseparably linked with The Manor at Hemingford Grey in Cambridgeshire — one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in Britain. Lucy Boston moved to The Manor in 1939, after purchasing the Norman house dating back to the 12th century. She devoted the next five decades to restoring the ancient structure and shaping its extensive gardens. The house, bordered by a moat and the River Great Ouse, and its winding herbaceous borders filled with roses, irises and imaginative topiary, reflect her enduring passion…

Festive wishes from OWLS
OWLS Community Car Scheme coordinators and drivers would like to wish all their customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. OWLS has provided almost 1,000 journeys this year to people living in Over, Willingham, Longstanton and Swavesey who need to attend medical appointments or make other necessary journeys, but are unable to access other means of transport. We urgently need more drivers to meet increasing demand. Are you retired or about to start retirement or perhaps working part-time? Drivers do not have to commit to regular days/times but being able to do one journey a week is really helpful. Drivers use their own cars and receive 45p…
