Report of Over WI meeting – May 2024
Our speaker for the May W.I. meeting was Susan Grossey, an author of historical crime novels. For twenty-five years, Susan ran an anti-money laundering consultancy, advising banks, law firms, casinos and the like on how to spot and deal with criminal proceeds. She became obsessed by financial crime – how it works, and the astonishing lengths to which people will go in order to preserve and increase their wealth and influence. It was perhaps not surprising that when Susan decided to venture into novel writing, financial crime featured prominently. Swavesey & District History Society – Report on May 2024 Meeting
May meeting. 48 people, including some first timers, attended to hear Eleanora Gardner, an Ely Tour Guide, speak on Cambridgeshire Customs and Folklore. She selected just a few topics from courtship, marriage, pregnancy, birth, death and burial, weather, curing the sick, calendar customs, ghosts and witchcraft. Because of the difficulty of travelling around in the Fens the most convenient time for young people to meet was often after church. Young ladies wore yarrow and young men wore wormwood to show members of the opposite, er, that they were interested in courtship and trying to find a possible partner. D-Day Beacon Lighting – Invitation to Veterans
Over and District Royal British Legion and Over Parish Council are hosting an event tocommemorate the anniversary of the D-Day landings on 6 June. There are some national events that we will be joining such as the Ringing of Bells at 6.30pm and the Beacon Lighting at 9.15pm as requested by HM King Charles III. New Fibre Craft Group at the Community Centre
Do you enjoy textile hobbies? Are you available on Friday mornings? Whether you’re an embroiderer, crocheter, knitter, patchworker …….any form of textile artist or crafter really, and whatever level of skill you have, you’d be most welcome to join us in Over Community Centre on Friday mornings from 9.30. Our aim to get together to socialise through our hobbies, hopefully inspiring and helping each other to learn new skills. We meet in the lounge and support the centre by buying our drinks from the café.

The Swavesey & Over Tennis Club – Free Trial Sessions
The Swavesey & Over Tennis Club (SOTC) is holding free trial sessions at Swavesey Village College Sport Centre on:• Monday 3rd June – 6.30 to 8.30pm• Friday 7th June – 6.30 to 8.30pm• Monday 10th June – 6.30 to 8.30pm We are a small friendly club and are after new members – whether you are new to the game or a seasoned player. CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE Preparing for Adulthood Young adults across Cambridgeshire with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), have helped design an event called Preparing for Adulthood, for 14 to 25-year-olds with SEND, as well as professionals, parents, and carers.
