News from RSPB Ouse Fen Nature Reserve
A New Quarry Partner At Ouse Fen the RSPB are working in partnership with the minerals industry to transform the aggregates quarry at Needingworth into the largest reedbed in the UK. This will create a wetland home supporting priority conservation species like Bittern and their reedbed neighbours. It’s a great place for the community to connect with nature too. Having worked to do this very successfully with Heidelberg Materials for more than two decades, 2024 will see a new owner take over quarry operations and help develop the growing nature reserve. We look forward to working with Brice Aggregates to build on the great success of the project so far…

Report on History Society Meeting 24th June 2024
Jim Stebbings from Dereham, near Norwich, gave a talk entitled “Oh yes, it is. The English Pantomime”. Pantomime has its roots in ancient Greece. In Roman times a pantomime was often an individual telling stories in mime, accompanied by dance and music. Most people know what they will get at a pantomime and they expect it. An older woman, the pantomime dame, is usually played by a man in drag (Dress Resembling a Girl). Audience participation is encouraged, including calls of “He’s behind you!” and “Oh, yes, it is!”. The good…

An Update from Fen Drayton Lakes
Our year on the reserve is split into two halves: the autumn-winter habitat management season and the spring-summer breeding season. During the colder months of the year there is plenty for us to do. With our volunteer groups, we are kept busy as we go around the reserve carrying out work to maintain or enhance areas for our key breeding species. Nesting islands and rafts on the lakes are cleared of vegetation, willow is removed from reedbeds, scrub is coppiced, and many other tasks are carried out to provide the ideal habitats for our target breeding species. The spring and summer are when we get to see the results of…
