Over Primary School’s “Willy Wonky” World Book Day Event raises funds for new playground
Over Primary School in Cambridge brought a touch of chocolate-filled magic to the community this World Book Day with a “Willy Wonky” themed fundraising event that delighted pupils, families and local residents. Inspired by the classic story, the school transformed donated chocolate bars into its own special “Willy Wonky” bars. Hidden inside 27 of the bars were special golden tickets, with prizes generously donated by local businesses across the Cambridge area. Prizes included experiences and treats from a range of community supporters, including a local ice skating rink (Cambridge Ice Arena) a Highland cow farm in nearby Willingham (Highland Cow Cottage) the popular local cafés Teabellies and Lot25, and several…

South Cambs District Councillor (SCDC) Bill Handley’s Report for March 2026
Local Government Reorganisation – consultation reminder Until Thursday 26 March, the government is consulting on four different options for Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, which have been developed by different councils across the region. I cannot overstate how important this issue is and I encourage you to have your say either via the government’s consultation portal online or SCDC’s own website. Cambridge City, East Cambs and South Cambs District Councils are all in favour of option B. The Government will make a final decision on which local government structures are put into place this summer with the new unitary councils operating in a shadow capacity from May…

Spring Plant Display Pots
Now is an ideal time to brighten up your front door or patio by planting up a pot of spring plants. A beautiful container of plants will make an ideal Mother’s Day present. The garden centres have a great choice of colourful primulas, pansies and other spring plants to make up your own display. Add some height with a few tete-a-tete daffodils. These will last longer if you can find some that are still in bud. Choose your container from the wide range of pottery and terracotta pots or pick a nice plastic pot or planter if you want something that is lighter to move around. The container must have…

Swavesey & District History Society: February Meeting Report – The Real Basil Brown: from Rickinghall to Sutton Hoo
Sarah Doig, also from Rickinghall in mid-Suffolk, spoke to 38 attendees. Basil was a modest man and was little known outside his local area until firstly, The National Trust took over the care of the Sutton Hoo estate i(ncluding the Anglo-Saxon burial mounds) in 1998 and secondly, the Netflix film The Dig was released in 2021. He undertook many archaeological digs throughout his life, and put much effort into making detailed records of each one. Sarah spent nearly five years researching over 100 of his notebooks, with his scribbled writing, and numerous sketches. He also took many photographs but had a habit of cutting people’s heads off. Thirty-five of his…
