Swavesey & District History Society
Swavesey & District History Society September 2024 meeting. The season opened to hear Swavesey resident, Selwyn, give a talk on Fenland Farming in the 1950s. Down in the fens 2½ miles northwest of Downham Market in Norfolk was a large farm built in 1847 which was compulsorily purchased from the lord of the manor by Norfolk County Council in 1919. Selwyn’s father was one of six smallholders sharing the extensive farm buildings and the highly productive peat/silt fenland. The surrounding land is between -1 and -2m below mean sea level and because of the serious risk of inundation by the sea, this high quality agricultural land is kept very efficiently…

It’s Nearly Time for The Scarecrow Festival
The Scarecrow Festival will be held in St Mary’s Church on Saturday 12th October (10am-5pm) and Sunday 13th October (11am-4pm). Entries are now invited from individuals, families & groups – make a scarecrow to enter into our festival – cash prizes for the winning scarecrows. A festival café will be running throughout the festival, serving tea, coffee, cakes & lunches. Date:12th and 13th October Start time:10am to 5pm

An Update from Over Gardening Club
We hope everyone enjoyed their gardens this summer. Our programme of gardening themed talks begins again in September. On Wednesday 18th September we are having a talk by George Lockwood about spring bulbs. On that evening we are also holding the judging of our annual growing competition – a free begonia tuber was handed out to each member in spring this year. From comments we are expecting very mixed results… We are also having our usual flower of the month competition – where members can bring in a cut flower from their garden and share information. Here’s what on offer at the Youth Cafe for the next couple of months – there’s plenty going on! Every Tuesday (term time only) at St Mary’s Church Hall. Year 6s from 6:45 to 8:00 pm Years 7 upwards from 7:30 – 9:00 pm Variety of activities available each night & portion of food. Only £1 a night!

The Library Presents Autumn 2024 Season
The Library Presents returns this October with an eight-week Autumn Season. The thrilling programme starts in October and includes music, puppetry, dance, circus, theatre, storytelling and workshops in arts, crafts and much more. With 43 events hosted in 23 venues across the county, there is sure to be something for everyone. Events in your area include: Creepy tales from Charles Dickens in Ghost of a Smile!; Shakespeare in a Suitcase – Macbeth by New International Encounter. Additionally, we have workshops in Paper Theatre-Making and Decorative Star Making and a Dance Workshop with film screening.
