Swavesey & District History Society – Report on April 2024 meeting
At short notice, the booked speaker unavoidably postponed his talk to the audience of 46, so two committee members gallantly provided excellent replacement talks. Roger Hetherington from Over spoke on “Understanding My German-Jewish Family Background”. Until 5 years ago he knew little except that his mother was born in Germany in 1920, one of 4 sisters. He discovered that his maternal grandfather was born in Germany in 1881 to a family of German Jews and that he too had brothers and sisters. A cousin provided some information along with a German website “Stolpersteine” which, for 20 years, has acknowledged individual holocaust individuals. He then searched the only surname he knew…

Dear residents, spring is well and truly here and the lighter evenings are upon us. Time, perhaps, to dust off your bicycle or walking boots and get outside on one of our amazing local paths, such as those on or close to the guided busway and the lakes at Northstowe and Swavesey. My report is an edited version of the report that I send to the parish councils in my division. FULL COUNCIL The Council met on Tuesday 19 March, and received reports on senior manager pay, pay policy, and gender and ethnicity pay gaps. Five motions were proposed. An Update from Fen Drayton Lakes
One hundred years ago, the land that would become Fen Drayton Lakes was a series of floodplain meadows in the river valley of the Great Ouse. This began to change when low-scale sand and gravel extraction started to take place during the war years in the 1940s for local military and agricultural use. Commercial extraction began in the 1950s and for the next 40-odd years the site became a large, active quarry exporting material for construction around the region. Nowadays, Fen Drayton Lakes is an RSPB nature reserve made up of a variety of habitats comprising open water, reedbed and wetland mixed with grassland, scrub, and woodland. A huge variety…
