Swavesey & District History Society – report of meeting January 2026
Thirty-five attended a talk on “The Young Charles Darwin in Cambridge” by Murray Jacobs from Linton. Darwin’s mother was part of the Wedgewood Pottery family and his father was a successful doctor. Charles attended Shrewsbury School as a boarder but hated it and was eventually removed as a failure. Aged 15 his father sent him to Edinburgh University, with his brother Erasmus, to study medicine but Darwin felt queasy at the sight of blood and he left Edinburgh without taking a degree. His father, anxious that he did not become idle, insisted that Darwin take up clerical studies in Cambridge. His name was listed in the admissions book at Christ’s…

Cambridgeshire County Council Monthly Report January 2026 – Cllr Luis Navarro
Bus Service Although responsibility for local bus services now sits with the Mayoral Combined Authority (CPCA), their reliability and accessibility remain a significant concern for residents in Over. Encouraging greater use of public transport and active travel is essential for a growing community and brings wider environmental and public health benefits. On Friday 17 January, I met with officers from the CPCA and Stagecoach to discuss practical ways to improve services and make buses a more attractive option for residents. While it would be difficult to introduce new services or major changes during the current fencing works, the discussions were constructive. A number of proposals are now being explored and…

W.I. January meeting – Bourn Mill restoration
Our speaker this month was Kate Armstrong from the charity Cambridge Past, Present and Future. Kate and her husband gave us an interesting talk about the restoration of Bourn windmill and milling through the ages which got 2026 off to a great start. Standing on a quiet hill about 3 miles west of Cambridge, Bourn Mill is a remarkable survivor of England’s industrial past. Widely considered one of the oldest windmills in the country, with a central oak post dated by scientists to the early 16th century, it is a rare example of an open trestle post mill and one of only around 50 such windmills remaining in the UK.…

St Mary’s Church
I write to you as your new vicar having moved into the village in August last year. Katie and myself, and our daughter Lily, are grateful for the warm welcome we have received and are enjoying settling into village life. I come to you from a post in the centre of Cambridge where I was curate of two churches (not at the same time) – ‘curate’ is the Church of England jargon for somebody in their first job as a minister. And before I was ordained I was a teacher in Special Educational Needs, focusing on children with particular mental health and behaviour needs. In my less-professional life I am…
